Press conference

Dear Member of the Press,

In anticipation of the opening of Hermitage Amsterdam, we will hold a Press Conference for the new exhibition Alexander, Napoleon & Joséphine, a story of friendship, war and art from the Hermitage on Friday 27 March 2015, from 10.30 a.m.

Two hundred years after the Battle of Waterloo, the Hermitage Amsterdam presents a compelling story of friendship, war, love, art and female power, told through the personal lives of Napoleon and Joséphine and highlights from her impressive art collection, which included Dutch and Italian masters such as Potter, Van der Werff, Luini and Canova. Also, the conflict between the two emperors comes to life again in Napoleon’s Russian campaign in 1812 and the dramatic crossing of the icy waters of the Berezina River by the French army during its retreat from Moscow. Napoleon was defeated and Alexander was the victor. Alexander became friends with the former empress Joséphine, whom he loved to visit at her residence, Château de Malmaison. One day while out walking with him she fell ill and died soon after of a throat infection. A large part of her collection would end up in the Hermitage. Her descendants married into the royal families of Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg, Norway and Sweden.

Accreditation is required for all journalists planning to attend the Press Conference. Accreditation applications can be on here on this website page. If you have any questions, please send an email to pressoffice@hermitage.nl or telephone +31 (0) 20 530 8755.

The deadline for accreditation applications is 24 March 2015. Confirmation letters will be e-mailed around 24 March and will include more information.

We hope that you will be able to join us for this important cultural event and look forward to welcoming you.

Sincerely,

Martijn van Schieveen & Kim van Niftrik
