The Leiden Collection, founded in 2003 by American
collectors Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan and his wife Daphne Recanati Kaplan, contains
approximately 250 paintings and drawings and is one of the largest and most
important collections of 17th-century Dutch paintings in private
hands. The collection is named after Rembrandtโs hometown in
honor of the masterโs transcendence and focuses on works by Rembrandt and his
followers. It highlights the personalities and themes that shaped the 17th
century over five generations.
The collection is the most comprehensive
representation of the Leiden artists known as โfine paintersโ. They focused on
painting portraits, tronies (character studies), genre scenes and history
paintings.
